From the days of slavery to the present, Black Social Dance has been responsible for most, if not all, of the most popular dance crazes which have influenced social, theatrical, and to some extent, concert dance. Such is the case with Hip Hop Dance. From the Cakewalk at the turn of the century, to the Charleston and Lindy in the twenties, to the swing era of the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, to the twist in the 60’s, disco, and the moon walk, this source of dance creativity and inspiration must be truly acknowledged and appreciated for its contribution to the world of dance.
